Cryptocurrency investors are reportedly circling the news publication Coindesk, following the bankruptcy filing of a Digital Currency Group (DCG) subsidiary. Sources familiar with the matter have indicated that the asking price for the news outlet Coindesk is around $200 million, and Charles Hoskinson, co-founder of Ethereum and founder of Cardano, has expressed interest in purchasing the publication.
On Jan. 18, Wang Feng, founder of China-based news publication Marsbit, announced his intentions to purchase Coindesk along with other members of the crypto industry. The news follows a report from Semafor at the end of November 2022 stating that Coindesk had received takeover solicitations from several investors. At that time, Semafor’s Bradley Saacks and Liz Hoffman reported that there was a „suggested $300 million purchase price.“ The report added that people familiar with the matter stated that the $300 million estimate was „considered too low.“
Coindesk is an independently operated news and conference business that is wholly owned by DCG. It generates most of its revenue from events such as the Consensus conference series, as well as its website, which features articles and commentaries related to the cryptocurrency space. Coindesk has become a major source of information and analysis for crypto enthusiasts and investors alike.
The news of Coindesk’s potential sale has attracted the attention of many investors and industry figures. Charles Hoskinson, for example, has expressed interest in purchasing Coindesk. In a YouTube video titled „Buying Coindesk,“ Hoskinson stated that he was in talks with people „close to the situation“ and that he was „trying to find out what’s going on.“ He also indicated that the asking price for the news outlet was around $200 million.
Wang Feng, founder of Marsbit, has also expressed an interest in purchasing Coindesk. In an email to media outlets, Wang Feng said that he and his team had been „conducting due diligence on the potential acquisition.“ He added that the team had „met with the current Coindesk management team and believe that this would be a great opportunity to add value to the existing platform.“
At this time, it is unclear if Coindesk will be sold or if the asking price will be met. However, the news of its potential sale has sparked a great deal of interest in the cryptocurrency community. It remains to be seen if a successful sale of Coindesk will take place and what impact it will have on the crypto space.
